Shopping for Antiques

Shopping for Antiques Icon

Whether you are searching for an antique clock or the perfect cameo, a few hours of leisurely strolling through antique shops can be a lot of fun. Even if you aren't looking for anything in particular, there will usually be some great conversation starters along the way.

Antique shops carry everything from art nouveau and antique stoves to depression glass, original Barbie dolls and hand tools. The experience can vary tremendously from shop to shop. One store might provide a delightful trip through the distant past; another might have little more than walls filled with junk. Of course, one person's junk is another person's treasure—which is what our friends have probably said about some of the people we've asked out on dates.

To make the date more intriguing, you might go in search of a particular item or something special. Maybe it's an antique doll or a Jefferson Airplane poster before Grace became a grandmother. You might even purchase a book on the things you are trying to find. That way you'll be able to know what you should pay and whether the item you have found is real or a fake.

COST

From totally free plus parking to far more than you ever planned on spending. Also allow money for lunch or snacks.

HOW LONG IT LASTS

Allow a few hours to walk through the shops. This is not a fancy date and you might finish with more dirt and dust than treasure. Or you may find just what you have been looking for.

HOW TO FIND THE SHOPS

First try the Yellow Pages under "antiques." Some cities have antique malls. Call the shops ahead of time to confirm if they will be open.

Be forewarned that many of the shops may be very unattractive inside and out.

You might call your local chamber of commerce to see if they have a listing of antique stores in your area. Also ask friends if they know where you might find fun antique stores.

BOOKS

There are thousands of books on antiques and collectibles. Check with your local library or purchase them if you like. Here are just a few that come well-recommended:

Antiques for Amateurs: Secrets of Successful Antiquing by Milan G. Vesely; $14.95.

Miller's Understanding Antiques by Judith Miller; $27.95.

Miller's Pocket Antiques Fact File by Judith Miller; $12.95.

Kovels' Know your Antiques; $19.00 and Kovels' Antique and Collectible Price List; $15.95 both books are by Terry and Ralph Kovel.

ANTIQUE SHOWS

Antique shows have become very popular. These are where a large number of antique dealers gather to sell their wares. Antique shows are usually advertised in the newspaper or check with local antique shops and ask if they know of any shows. Call your chamber of commerce or convention center to see if any antique shows are scheduled in your area.

ANTIQUES ON WHEELS—CAR SHOWS

Antique car shows can be fascinating. Check in the Yellow Pages to see if there's an antique car club in your area or do an internet search. The events that they hold are usually free, and they will be able to give you a listing of times and places.
